"I miss the weeks I can’t step inside that sound-proof booth, sink into a story, and record. It’s more than a habit. It’s therapy. Initially, volunteering as a narrator for the Talking Book Services was more about my being an author and making my own books available via another venue to readers, but once a year of volunteering turned into three, I realized I’d been sucked more into the giving aspect. It is no longer about me. And to be frank, the program is giving back to me more than I ever gave to it."

During the months of April and May each year, the South Carolina State Library Talking Book Services Department offers a fine arts creative outlet for blind and visually impaired students in our state.
Our volunteers play a vital role in helping us provide quality library services to South Carolina citizens who have difficulty using standard printed materials due to qualifying visual or physical conditions. Volunteer opportunities include:
The South Carolina State Library's Talking Book Services (TBS) Program is now serving patrons with an innovative new service called Duplication on Demand (DoD). DoD allows patrons to receive almost any book available on BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download). When patrons order books or automatic selection orders books for patrons, they are recorded on a cartridge and sent out within a few days. There's no waiting for other patrons to return a copy; all downloadable books are always available.
Congratulations to the winners of the 2020 Talking Book Services Art Gallery Competition. This week we honored them with an awards ceremony showcasing their art. The competition ordinarily culminates in the spring before the end of the school year. However, the COVID-19 shutdown forced us to postpone the event. The virtual ceremony included a photo and a description of each piece. SCSL Director Leesa Aiken awarded the State Librarian award to Travis Kitchen for his three-dimensional work entitled "Kracken Attack" (pictured here). Congratulations to all of our award winners.
